Toro Y Moi

BULLETT: I just listened to your new album and I really love it- so- what’s the perfect setting to listen to Underneath the Pines?

Chaz: Uhm, the perfect setting? Probably a living room or outside. But, I like to listen to music in my car. So that would probably be my first pick.

What’s the most memorable show you’ve played?

I just went to Asia for the first time, so that was pretty fun. And the first time I went to Poland was also really amazing, there were like 2,000 people in a tent singing along. It was crazy.

So, while touring are there ever things you miss about your home, or have you thought about moving somewhere else? Where are you based now?

I’m in Columbia, South Carolina right now.

Have you thought about moving ever?

Yeah but I don’t know where yet.

So what are the top three places you would move?

I like North Carolina, California, Portland, and Seattle.

Where do you feel most inspired?

I guess when I’m in my studio

I was also wondering whether you grew up with religion and where you find spirituality, because a lot of your songs are very spiritual.

Yeah I don’t really like going to church, but I don’t think that, I wouldn’t say that I’m Anti-Religion,  I was raised Catholic but I don’t really participate in any religion, except for family stuff.

Do you find spirituality in other parts of life?

Yeah, I mean when it comes to music I think that music is pretty spiritual, I don’t know if mine is spiritual, I can’t really relate to that. But it’s something.

If you weren’t playing music what would you be doing?

Hopefully being a graphic designer somewhere. Either at some firm or in my house, I don’t know.

And do you think is there any sort of correlation between graphic design and your music, like aesthetics and the music you make?

Not really, I don’t really see a correlation. I guess my music and graphic design are pretty experimental, that’s as far as I can really make a connection.

This album is a little different from your previous albums. And I was just wondering if in the last year while you were making this album, did you discover a specific record you were really into that you hadn’t listened to before?

Yeah, I got really into Piero Umiliani and Ennio Morricone. And I was inspired by more funk and soul music.

Is there any other band right now that’s sort of a newer up and coming band that you’ve been listening to?

I’ve been really into Ace Hood.

Currently based in his hometown of South Carolina, Bundick can be found touring throughout Europe until the end of this month.
