Tinder has been one of the most successful dating apps ever—its ‘swipe right’ philosophy has even made its way into the modern canon. But until today, the app only offered male and female gender options. To encourage inclusivity on the site, Tinder has launched the #AllTypesAllSwipes campaign, in which Tinder worked with the LGBTQ community to make the app a more queer friendly place.
As part of the campaign, the company launched 37 new gender identities that include options for trans and gender-nonconforming users. And if a user doesn’t feel comfortable describing themselves with any of the new labels, they can now write in their own.
“Our goal is to provide a product that gives our transgender and gender non-conforming users a better experience on Tinder,” said Tinder CEO, Sean Rad, in a statement.
This new update will allow trans and non-binary users to swipe right more comfortably, and helps propel Tinder forward in a progressive way.
“For many trans people, opening up to a new romantic prospect about being trans can be a really nerve-racking experience,” said trans advocate Andrea James. “I know this update will help trans and gender non-conforming users feel more comfortable while forging new relationships. […] Tinder has been working hard this year to close that gap.”
