After news broke yesterday of Prince’s sudden death, thousands of fans flocked to Minneapolis’ beloved First Avenue, where the local icon famously filmed his 1984 feature, Purple Rain. In honor of the Minnesota-born musician, the venue shut down the street for a free all-night dance party, where a purple-clad crowd sang songs and shared stories about the man who put the humble, northern metropolis on the map.
Among attendees was rising rapper Lizzo, who immediately flew back to her native state from Los Angeles when she heard the news. The emcee, a favorite of Prince, was featured on his 2014 album, PLECTRUMELECTRUM, alongside fellow Twin Cities artist Sophia Eris for a track called, “BOYTROUBLE.”
During the Current-hosted block party, Lizzo delivered a special on-stage tribute, alongside performances from Fort Wilson Riot, tiny deaths, Nooky Jones, Chastity Brown, PaviElle, Sarah White, DJ Shannon Blowtorch and P.O.S. Prince always had a magical way with bringing together local artists.
