This Is the Best Photo You’ll See All Week

+

Aside from the eternally optimistic diehard fans convincing themselves that this is definitely going to be the year, there’s usually not much of a reason for the rest of us to pay attention to a spring training baseball game. But a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Atlanta Braves has given us one of the best photos we’ve seen in a long time.

It didn’t come from the action on the field, but rather after a batter lost control of the bat, flinging it hurtling into the stands, where it almost connected with the face of an unsuspecting boy. Christopher Horner of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review captured the moment when a man seated next to him reached out and saved the boy from certain serious injury.

The photo is striking enough on its own, but it could also very easily serve as a Rorschach test for any number of different metaphors you want to draw from it. You could say the boy is a symbol of all that’s wrong with the youth of today: not living in the moment, face buried in his phone. You might also, if you were of the conservatively inclined persuasion, tease out something about the strong meaty forearms of the vigilant man protecting us from impending danger.

Then again, I’m not a paranoid conservative baby, so I’m going to have to put some more thought into how tht one works.
