In the words of Frank Costanza, I’ve got a lot of problems with you people, and now you’re going to hear about it!
Drake, oh Drake Drake Drake. I love you so much. You’re from Toronto, just like me! We even grew up in the same affluent Jewish neighborhood. I met you at an amusement park back when you were still on Degrassi. I love your music and the way you promote our city and I think it’s really cute when you sit front row at Raptors games with your mom. Why did you have to participate in this nonsense? But alas, here we are.
So on Monday what sounded to most people with functioning ears and a general interest in music like a pretty whatever cover of Nico’s classic, heartbreaking “These Days” hit the internet. The reaction was pretty divisive, with some saying “Woah, this is a whole new sound for Drake and we dig it” and others saying “do rap” and “this is wack” (that last one is a reoccurring comment on YouTube).
Listen, I like Drake’s singing voice and Babeo Baggins’ voice is super lovely. That is not the problem. The problem is that this half-baked Nico cover need not exist. Sing it live once or twice if you want to so badly, but don’t go to a studio and record it and let it live on the Internet. I’m of the belief that if you’re going to cover a song, especially one so iconic and heartfelt, you really need to interpret it. There’s not much interpreting going on here, they just swapped the stunning folk guitar for a synth-y sounding piano and voila! Utter crap.
But wait, it gets worse. Not only is this a sub-par cover of a song that gives a lot of people a lot of feels, today we learn Babeo Baggins has the audacity to rename the song before throwing it on her upcoming album, Love Songs for Tough Guys. Baggins’ version is now dubbed “Things I Forgot to Do [Feat. Drake].” Ummmm… not cool. Not cool at all. It’s a cover honey, you can’t give it a new name. And what’s worse is now there are a bunch of people in the comments being like, “Who sang the original?” and “I don’t know how to find it, what’s it called?” Babbeo claims to be a huge Nico fan, even going so far as to say that “These Days” is her favorite song, but what Nico fan would do this?! For shame.
And if that wasn’t enough, in an interview with Fader, Baggins reveals that Drake only just heard the song, like, right before they recorded this monstrosity. “He connected with it too,” she says. “He thought it was a really great song. That’s how it came to life.” Yeah, no shit it’s a really great song. It’s a really great song and you jerks just shit all over it.
