Did you think there were only going to be two films based on The Hobbit, which is only one book to begin with, and then we’d be done with the Tolkien universe? Of course not! The Los Angeles Times writes that director Peter Jackson may be considering a third film based on the novel, whether drawn from extraneous material in The Hobbit or something else from Tolkien’s extensive Middle Earth bibliography. Because, do you know how many words he spent on chronicling the succession lines of the elder gods, family trees of dwarves, and stuff like that? It’s really insane. But Tolkien’s writing is kind of dreary in general, I suppose, and Jackson’s done a pretty nice job of sprucing it up for the big screen. If he wants to make a third film, he can probably make it work. There is also this amazing note toward the end of the article, which notes that Warner Bros. is looking for big blockbuster franchise pictures to shore up its bottom line: “But so far it only has one film of note on its 2014 calendar — a movie based on the Lego children’s toys.” A movie based on the Lego toys, haha. Hahah!
