There’s been a whole lot of chatter in the past couple years about acts that appropriate the sonics of R&B (think the XX, The Weeknd, Little Dragon, Nicolas Jaar) without necessarily being R&B themselves. But maybe Seattle-based duo THEESatisfaction are going to change that. The cohorts of hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces were signed to Sub Pop after their appearance on their excellent 2011 release Black Up, and right at the end of last month, the label released THEESatisfaction’s full length awE NaturalE.
This clip for the album’s cut “QueenS” features one of those all-girl parties that you’ve heard so much about, but that don’t really exist outside of music videos and, um, other videos. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who’s watching), this clip doesn’t end with any pillow fights or whipped cream, just a bunch of extremely fashionable black women who decided to get dressed up for each other, have a dance party, and pretty much just celebrate being ladies together. It’s pretty cool to watch, but a fairly frustrating thought for any guy who’s ever been at a party and thought, “Are all of the girls hiding tonight, or what?” But sometimes dudes, it’s not about you, and for girls trying to overcome the male gaze you heard so much about in that Hitchcock class you took in college, here’s one way to do it.
