Remember in the pre-Weeknd times, when it was the xx who were being hailed as the #1 progenitors of Stereogum-friendly R&B? Well it turns out that they still like that stuff! At the end of last week, the news dropped that one of the tracks on Alicia Keys’ upcoming 5th studio album, Girl on Fire, is a collaboration with producer Jamie xx. Similarly, this morning Popjustice pointed to an item from the latest issue of Q where Oliver Sim of the xx talks about his admiration for Beyoncé: “Beyoncé is very special. I think she’s important. I think the super-pop thing that supposedly died with Michael Jackson is still there, with her. I saw her at Glastonbury and I may have shed a tear. Writing a song for her that’s the dream. The full Sasha Fierce.” Apparently Sim has also gone to dinner with Beyonce and Jay-Z, probably in the couple’s capacity as super popular mainstream ambassadors to lesser known Best New Music acts. None of this is really news (unless you enjoy imagining what it would be like for the xx to have dinner with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and what the hell, we’ll throw in Russell Crowe too), but it’s always interesting to watch worlds collide.
