Everyone involved in the making of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master has been fairly coy about the movie’s ties to Scientology, because it’s a great will-he-or-won’t-he? angle to drive interest in the movie. (Not that PTA’s rabid faithful needed any prodding, but still.) However, the release of The Master‘s final theatrical trailer solidifies the connections. First off, there’s Philip Seymour Hoffman’s charismatic leader talking about unlocking the secrets to living in man’s true bodies, and a nonbeliever who counters that his organization is “the basis of a cult.” Then, there’s Amy Adams asserting how they have to defend themselves by aggressively attacking any questioners (shades of the TomKat split), followed by Todd from Breaking Bad (playing Hoffman’s son) talking about how his dad is making it all up as he goes along. Sure, we still have a little while to figure out if all the connections come through. It sure seems like 2+2+2+2 adds up to WORSHIP THY ALIEN GOD, though. It’s out on September 14.
