The ‘Man of Steel’ Trailer Falls Into Predictable Darkness

The full Man of Steel trailer has finally arrived, and without answering too many plot questions (What is Michael Shannon up to? Who are these people?), it has certainly put an end to one: Are we getting the Superman we deserve? The answer is a resounding yes, which means troubled, existential, and super sad. But once he gets the cape on, looking all god-like thanks to director Zack Snyder’s signature slo-mo style, things pick up considerably. The cheese from Bryan Singer’s misguided Superman Returns is washed away by Snyder’s muted tones, and in the half-second glimpses we do see, it looks like Earth will get shelacked by an effortlessly Michael Shannon as General Zod, in a bowl cut no less. Russell Crowe is there as Supes Sr., and Amy Adams makes a quick appearance as Lois Lane. Oh, and there’s flying, lots of flying.  Man of Steel hits theaters June 14, 2013.
