First Look: The GODDESS Collection Starring Alexa Demie and Bella Hadid

Every girl deserves some go-to Goddess wear. That’s the philosophy behind GODDESS, a new line of t-shirts from the Los Angeles lifestyle brand Madebuyus. A collaboration between Madebuyus co-founder Alexa Demie and New York-based visual artist Alayne Macchiaverna, GODDESS consists of 6 graphic tees featuring reinterpretations of Demie’s favorite ‘90s supermodel editorials.

“I have always gravitated towards the ’90s era of supermodels. I feel like the specialness of editorials and models was so powerful then. The model had to provoke feeling, not just beauty,” Demie explains.

As a child, Demie obsessed over the performance of feminine beauty. She first discovered her heroes in her makeup artist mother’s collection of magazines. For GODDESS, Demie chose the 6 ladies whose pictures she fawned over most frequently – Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, and Helena Christensen.

These 6 have a story. These 6 are iconic. These 6 werent just faces,” she says of her muses. Demie selected a signature photograph of each and shared them with Macchiaverna, who reinvented them using paint and graphic design.

“From the base photographs, the designs began to evolve. All have their own erotic vibes. An ode to women’s sexuality resonates throughout,” Macchiaverna describes. “Linda was first up, the ice princess...Then came Cindy, my mother fuckin Wonder Woman. The last design of Claudia was my favorite. She’s my Miami queen, my sultry tropical goddess,” she continues.

Macchiaverna had just as much fun refashioning the other models – especially Helen Christensen. The Danish beauty’s mega-famous, pool-submerged Chanel ad is now a GODDESS Godzilla image. In the updated version, she ascends into the clouds above a bird’s eye view of Manhattan.

“The inspiration for Helena was taken from that movie monster magic,” Macchiaverna notes.

Most simply, Demie conceived GODDESS as part of her overall crusade for quality. “I want to honor these models, these women, and to remind girls who now wear them on the tees to go above and beyond. Try to be iconic,” Demie says with a smile.
