Let’s play a game. I want you to think of all the worst things about the fashion industry–slimy, exploitative creeps who prey on young women, a celebrity-obsessed culture devoid of meaningful artistic appreciation, and most money coming from either corporate behemoths or struggling consumers who buy trash to simulate emotional wholeness. Now, with that in mind, I want you to imagine the most depraved combination of one photography icon, one celebrity (aka “designer”) and one moneyed corporation that you could imagine teaming up to shoot a campaign. Ready, set, go!
Okay, so mine were Irina Ionesco shoots Roman Polanski’s collection for Delia’s, or Joel-Peter Witkin takes on the Ed Gein for Burlington Coat Factory campaign, but I only took it there because I was struggling for anything more soul-crushing than the fashion (and feminist) singularity that has occurred: Terry Richardson has now shot not 1 but 2 campaigns for the Kardashian Kollection, once for Sears that we haven’t seen yet (TRIFECTA!) and one for UK brand Lipsy who I’ve never heard of, but there’s photo evidence!
Get your credit card ready, because what you’ve REALLY been craving this season are more bandage dresses and leopard print halter tops. I’m so confused. Did Terry Richardson even shoot this? It’s all looking very Frederick’s of Hollywood to me.
R.I.P. fashion; welcome commerce.
