Frank Cisneros is The Bourgeois Pig’s experimental cocktail kingpin. He’s no stranger to the cocktail-bar universe, as co-owner of The Bourgeois Pig, Gin Palace, Cienfuegos, Amor Y Amargo, and The Drink. Cisneros opened The Pig’s second location in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, with Ravi DeRossi and Luis Gonzalez. The bougie saloon vibe mirrors the East Village site, with gilded Victorian furniture, blood-red wallpaper, and dim red lighting. For his movie-inspired cocktail, Cisneros went for something in the amari family, which he says is similar to the bitter, not-so-American family in The Royal Tenenbaums.

“The drink is named after the movie The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). I used to work with a guy named Nick Jarrett, and we were just messing around with drinks at this other bar that we worked at called Dram. Essentially, what we were doing was adding Cynar or Zucca, which are Italian bitter aperitifs, to somewhat classic cocktail specs. I started messing around with a drink called The Gold Rush, which is just bourbon, honey and lemon traditionally, and I added a little bit of zucca, which is a rhubarb amaro. We all really liked it and when I showed it to him he was like, Oh yeah this reminds me a lot of one of my drinks. He had named that The Royal Tenenbaum. I was like, Well you have The Royal Tenenbaum, so I guess this is the Margot Tenenbaum. And then from there we made a whole slew of cocktails that are a family of Tenenbaums. This cocktail, The Margot Tenenbaum, has probably become the most popular out of all of them. It’s made in other bars that I’m not even affiliated with.”
