After the first photo surfaced of Agyness Deyn playing a stripper in the upcoming Pusher, a remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 cult classic of the same name, critics criticized the star’s, ahem, body of work.
But as far as she’s concerned, the racy role is a perfect fit. “When I did Pusher in the summer, it was like: this is what I’m supposed to be doing,” Deyn, whose filmography includes a role in 2010’s Clash of the Titans, told The Evening Standard.
And the picture in question, a flame-haired Deyn in red pasties and a bow-adorned bodysuit, is garnering the indie vehicle some serious press.
“I researched in pole dancing clubs and spoke to strippers,” costume stylist Alexandra Mann tells BULLETT. “After getting to grips with the practicalities (ie. You can’t wear gloves or stockings as you won’t be able to grip the pole), I concentrated on the underwear and making as much impact as possible.”
For Mann, that meant approaching the one lingerie brand synonymous with high-class stripper style. “The only option for Flo’s pole dancer look was Agent Provocateur,” she confesses. “I had full access to their amazing archive and Agyness had fun dressing up and getting a feel for her alter ego…If Agent Provocateur did strip clubs, they would probably be the best strip clubs in the world!”
In the end, Mann created a look to represent the character’s so-called complexity. “I respect her so much for embracing the stripper look,” Mann continues of Deyn. “She is so brave.”
