Photographer Shelly Calton’s new series Concealed, She’s Got a Gun is a stunning reminder that besides oil, the richest natural resource in the Lone Star State is still bat-shit crazy gun nuts. However, Carlton has chosen to show the softer side of insanity in her series by showcasing women going about their daily lives while packing heat.
The photographs are an important reminder of how ubiquitous firearms truly are at every second of the day and she dutifully covers all the bases of Texas living. Toiling away in the garden? You best come strapped. Candidly leaning against your car in a business suit? Not without a handgun you ain’t! Pensively staring out of your living room window or seductively lying on your bed in clothing from a Las Vegas thrift shop with your old, ugly dog? Fool, you think that pooch gon’ save you on his own?! Playing the piano? Motherfucker, you ever hear of John Lennon?!?!
Carlton, whose photos can be seen here, adds that these pistol packin’ vixens are often unassuming, including young mothers with their babies at the supermarket. Just like today, when this unassuming mother who was shot and killed by her two-year-old son at an Idaho Walmart after he pulled her handgun from her purse before pulling the trigger.
Concealed, She’s Got a Gun will be released as a book by Kehrer Verlag in Europe in March 2015 and in the United States in September 2015.
