Dub Thompson, the 19-year-old duo Evan Laffer and Matt Pulos, have just released their debut album 9 Songs with their label Dead Oceans. The album itself is post-psychedelic, funny, and all-together impressive . They’re starting their first tour of the US and Canada alongside Ought and have brought on the 19-year-old bassist Madie McCormack to collaborate with on their second album. We spoke with them recently as they were setting up to play a club in Durham, North Carolina. You can catch them tonight at Arrow Bar in New York’s East Village and at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg, tomorrow night.
So you guys have been on tour 10 days and already played six shows with no more days off for the remainder of the tour–how has it been so far?
Madie McCormack: Well our tour manager is the only one who can drive.
Evan Laffer: Yeah, you have to be 21 or older to legally drive a van of this size, or any rented car I guess. So he has been doing all the driving.
Matt Pulos: We’ve been doing all the drinking!
What’s been the worst show?
Evan: Last night [Atlanta] was the worst show
Matt: Last night was great.
Madie: No, last night was fucked up because we had a bunch of technical problems. We didn’t really know how to deal with it.
Evan: But it was also fun because we played with Weed and Fucked Up and they have a very fervent and ready-to-mosh crowd coming to see them.
Matt: There was a really good set of like five drunk 19-year-olds
Evan: One of them said to us that we were saving our 19-year-old age group! That was before they got kicked out.
Teens talking to teens about teens. Have you guys been able to drink at the venues you are playing?
Madie: I think most of them don’t know we’re 19
Evan: You can get the sharpie x off of your hands.
Matt: Just soap and water.
Have you done that yet?
Matt: I have!
Madie: I didn’t want to get our tour manager in any trouble.
Are you guys excited to be back in New York?
All three: Very excited!
Madie: I almost wish that it was the last show because that would be the ultimate finale, but it’s actually right in the middle of our tour.
You guys have been doing this whole tour with Ought, how has that been?
Evan: They are inspiring to watch!
Madie: They’re fucking awesome and really nice. Apparently people are saying all of us sleep on one mattress every night.
Is that the hot gossip on the Dub Thompson/Ought tour?
Evan: We all share one room usually, we get a room for like one or two people and sneak the rest in. We’ve been putting Matt in suitcases.
Matt: I put a gag in my mouth. Evan cannot fit in a suitcase…
