Hard to believe, but 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop” is thirteen years old by now. And yet it retains its ability to get lodged in our heads for hours whenever it comes up. As indelible as it was, this update from Swedish duo Exon Banks goes a long way toward taking over some of that psychological space reserved for the original.
The group, just like everyone else, have always flipped the switch immediately to party mode whenever they’ve heard it , but this year they decided to recreate it it from a woman’s point of view.
“‘Candy Shop’ is about asking for what you want without permission and expanding one’s perspective on femininity and gender,” they explain of the recording. “It’s about reclaiming the right to your own sexuality and transcending gender expectations. Most of all, it’s about being yourself and enjoying life.”
