In one of the more random designer collaborations in recent memory, cult skatewear label Supreme has joined forces with the MTA — yep, that’s New York’s Metro Transit Authority — on branded subway swipe cards in celebration of the S/S 2017 season (and I guess the impending subway fare hike). Nothing like the iconic red and white Supreme logo to make you feel better about shelling out $3 to spend your morning commute pressed up against a stranger’s clavicle.
The brand released a since-deleted promotional video yesterday on Instagram that showed the card in action and confirmed rumors of the collab, and needless to say, fans are freaking out.
An image of the cards is also available on Supreme’s website as part of the preview for the forthcoming collection. In a decidedly more high-profile move, the brand also recently announced a collaboration with Louis Vuitton, which includes a variety of red and white, LV printed jackets, shoes, and bags that I can only imagine will soon be ubiquitous among the cooler-than-thou street style set. There’s also a ridiculous, $68,500 trunk in the mix, which, for obvious reasons, will be ubiquitous among nobody. And because these things are always shrouded in much secrecy, WWD reports on industry rumors of a possible Supreme x Lacoste collection, which I, for one, hope are accurate.
Despite such luxury associations, Supreme has long celebrated its downtown New York skater kid roots, so it’s easy to see why being in the pockets of New Yorkers in association with the city’s most legendary (not to mention democratizing) mode of transportation would be appealing. I just didn’t realize the MTA was so cutting edge.
