Guys, did Taylor Swift just brilliantly troll Hillary Clinton or was this totally unintentional? Let’s dissect.
Okay so Ellen did a Q&A with Clinton today via Facebook Live, and among some serious (okay not like, actually serious, but election-related) questions like “What will you do your first week as POTUS?” (notice the wording in that one) and “If you win will you make a bill that prevents Donald Trump from running in the next election?” is a seemingly unrelated question from none other than Taylor Swift. And it’s amazing in it’s simplicity and undertones: “Have you seen Lemonade and do you like it?”
As you probably already know, Clinton has made countless, transparent, misguided attempts to connect with black voters. Liking (or pretending to like) Lemonade is so something she would do. And when I say “pretending to like” I don’t mean there’s any reason she wouldn’t genuinely like it—it’s amazing—I’m just suggesting that given her demanding campaign schedule it’s likely she hasn’t had time to watch it. I have deadbeat friends with nothing but time who haven’t watched it. Those people are dumb, but I digress.
Clinton responded, as you would imagine, with unspecific praise. “I have seen parts of it,” she says. “And I do like it.” It’s a clever answer, as now if someone asks if she likes any specific part, she can be like, “Oh, I didn’t see that part.”
But back to the issue at hand: was this a purposeful troll on Tay Tay’s part? Or does she genuinely want to know what Clinton thinks of Lemonade? If it’s the former, everything I thought I knew about Taylor Swift is wrong.
