Here’s a Suggested Existential Reading List for Sad Taylor Swift on a Boat

Big news you guys, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles of the One Directions have launched a million “never ever getting back together” jokes on the internet today. Speaking of launching, here’s yr girl contemplating the meaning of it all on a docked boat in the most Taylor Swift photo ever (via @Jhurls23/Twitter). She looks like she needs a hug, but hugs are for closers. Instead we’ve got some suggested reading material to help her through these tough times.

1) Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And then one fine morning—

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. — F Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

2) “There is something infantile in the presumption that somebody else has a responsibility to give your life meaning and point… The truly adult view, by contrast, is that our life is as meaningful, as full and as wonderful as we choose to make it.” ― Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

3) “I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.” ― Umberto Eco

4) “Enough. Sudden enough. Sudden all far. No move and sudden all far. All least. Three pins. One pinhole. In dimmost dim. Vasts apart. At bounds of boundless void. Whence no farther. Best worse no farther. Nohow less. Nohow worse. Nohow naught. Nohow on.” — Samuel Beckett, Worstward Ho

5) “I have crossed the seas, I have left cities behind me, and I have followed the source of rivers towards their
source or plunged into forests, always making for other cities. I have had women, I have fought with men ; and
I could never turn back any more than a record can spin in reverse. And all that was leading me where ? To this very moment…”  ― Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea

6) “This is awful. I don’t know what’s going to happen to me or to anyone else in the world.” ― Raymond Carver, Where I’m Calling From

7) “But things don’t go the way they supposed And this bitch gettin me back in my clothes And I’m gon’ get on the road and do what the dog do ARF ARF! Your whole crew.” – DMX, “Fuck U Bitch”
