Tupac and Madonna’s relationship is the stuff of 90s nostalgia legend, largely because it was kept under wraps until just a couple years ago. Now, an emotionally charged letter (published, of course, by TMZ) gives new insight into their relationship. The letter, which Tupac wrote Madonna from jail, says that race was a primary factor in their breakup.
“For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting,” he says. “But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was.”
He goes on to extend his friendship to Madonna, saying, “I offer my friendship once again this time much stronger and focused.” He ends the letter by asking Madonna to visit him.
It’s really a lovely letter, so lovely, in fact, that when it goes up for auction on July 19th via Gotta Have Rock and Roll, the starting bid is $100k. if you don’t have that kind of cash, you can read most of it here, for free.
