There’s a lesson that we can all relate to in the video for “Cola Boyys” from Magic Potion: Don’t tangle with a gang of bad ass greaser lizards, but, even if you do, and they end up punching your blob alien friend to death, you can always still surf with his ghost. Who hasn’t been there before?
The oddball nature of the video, which was made by the Stockholm band themselves, matches well with the slightly skewed indie-surf-garage sound of the track. There’s something strange going on in both, but you’re compelled to pay attention anyway. “Cola Boyys is a slightly fuzzy road-burner with a surfy outro,” the band says of the song. “It also makes for great sludgy doom metal when pitched down a notch.”
To animate the video, they used approximately 4,000 computer drawings, “made in a state of frenzy in Microsoft Paint”, they say. “The theme explored in the pictures is the discursive order of the songs’ lyrics and the secret evolution of lizard people walking the earth. Inspiration was gathered from Toxic Crusaders and Kandinsky’s The Spiritual in Art.”
Magic Potion’s debut Pink Gum is out May 27th on Swedish DIY label, PNKSLM Recordings.
