Everything old is new again, from tattoo choker necklaces (something I could never have imagined I’d wear as an adult) to Tamagotchis to Rachael Leigh Cook smashing eggs to make a point about drugs. It’s almost as if we’ve run out of trends and are just slowly cycling back through the old ones. And so it makes perfect sense that Steve Madden should choose this moment in time to bring back their most iconic design: the Slinky sandal. You know, those chunky black shoes with the stretchy band in the middle that thwacked not entirely unpleasantly at the soles of your feet when you walked, and which, regardless of whether you were in middle school or college at the time, you probably had a pair of circa 1998. Yeah, those are happening again, so crank up the alt-rock and don’t toss out your choker just yet.
The new Slinky is a little more refined than its forebearer, with a sleeker, less clunky sole and an overall slimmed-down silhouette. It’s definitely a throwback, but since slides are literally everywhere right now, it also feels strangely contemporary. And hey, if you never got a chance to be a cool girl in the 90s, well, who says there’s no such thing as second chances?
