Indie rock and politics: They’re a natural fit, no? To celebrate the season, Stephen Colbert is hosting a music festival—the so-called “StePhest Coachella ’12″—on top of the World War II aircraft carrier U.S. Intrepid. (Which is docked off of 46th & 11th in Manhattan, in case you’re shaky on your WWII history.) Artists like the Flaming Lips, Grandmaster Flash, Santigold, Grizzly Bear and Fun. will play, though I’d imagine some special guests might chime in at some point or another. Expect the unexpected! Tickets are free, and will soon be available at Colbert’s website. Watch the video where Stephen Colbert announces his festival with a lot of grinning and winking and goofery; there’s also a pretty great/awkward Michael Stipe cameo as well.
