It’s hard to believe anyone anywhere is even still using stamps never mind looking at them and appreciating them, but when they’re adorned with the designs of Tom of Finland, then it’s a bit more understandable. The artist, who died in 1991, and whose name was Touko Laaksonen, was best known for his homoerotic bondage images, which, surprisingly, now appear on the stamps of his home country of Finland, where they have been selling like crazy throughout the world.
“We haven’t seen this kind of interest before in Posti’s history and we probably won’t again soon,” Markku Penttinen of the Finnish postal service told YLE.
“Our starting point was to get Touko Laaksonen’s artwork in our stamps. We know that he was very well-known globally. Of course the subject matter is also topical and much discussed. This equation has worked better than we anticipated.”
