Tumblr fantasy Ryan Gosling is having a typically busy 2013. He’s already released one movie—the tepidly received Gangster Squad—and has the much more promising The Place Beyond the Pines and Only God Forgives up next. But after that, he’s done professionally, at least for a bit. “I’ve been doing it too much,” he told the Associated Press. “I’ve lost perspective on what I’m doing. I think it’s good for me to take a break and reassess why I’m doing it and how I’m doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does.” That’s kind of a bummer, since his wildly productive 2012—in which Drive, The Ides of March and Crazy, Stupid, Love drove him to ubiquitous popularity as the effortlessly handsome guy who also seemed like a mensch off-screen, like a modern-day Robert Redford—seemed to hint at Gosling making The Leap to whatever nebulously conceived upper tier of Hollywood there was left to reach. Here’s to a healthy sabbatical.
