Sofia Coppola’s Next Film Will Be ‘The Little Mermaid’

+

Here’s some excellent news for people who are fans of Pitchfork-approved soundtracks, existential ennui, and women with fish tails instead of legs: Sofia Coppola has tapped her next project to be a retelling of The Little Mermaid. The script, originally written by Kelly Marcel and Abi Morgan, has been swimming around Hollywood for a while, at one point with Atonement‘s Joe Wright attached to direct (Wright is currently in the process of re-imagining the Peter Pan saga instead). According to Variety, it will be rewritten by Caroline Thompson who 20 years ago wrote the screenplay for The Nightmare Before Christmas. If Thompson’s version stands, it will mark the first time Coppola directs from someone else script since she broke out with The Virgin Suicides. It’s not known how faithful this version will be to Hans Christian Andersen’s original, and the same goes for Karen O’s cover of “Under the Sea.”
