Snoop Dogg Explains Why He Became Snoop Lion in New Documentary

+

Reincarnated is about “the unexpected journey of a modern icon,” so the trailer tells us. I thought it was just about Snoop Dogg’s name-change to Snoop Lion, and his newfound decision to smoke even more weed and switch to a reggae sound. But maybe there’s something heavy going on here! Yes, this is totally the type of vanity project disguised as artistic breakthrough that would be 100% irredeemable instead of mostly so, were it coming from any other artist. I mean, imagine 90 minutes about Adam Levine “finding himself” on a spirituality quest—yikes! But Snoop is such a winning personality that I can’t bring myself to be too scoff-jawed. It gives us fantastic quotes, such as one of the trailer’s spirited moments—”Fuck Snoop Dogg. Don’t think about none of the shit he rapped about. Hustlin’ and making money and drug dealing and shooting. All that shit be outta here.”—and a bunch of great B-roll footage of old Jamaican dudes getting high. (Plus, footage of Diplo hanging out for whatever reason.) It premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7.
