Yoko Ono has never lacked for ambition, but #smilesfilm, her newest project is logistically unlikely right from the start. Through Twitter, Ono is endeavoring to collect smiling photos of every person in the world, and if you think that’s a typo, read her opening statement (which was made all the way back in 1967): “My ultimate goal in film-making is to make a film which includes a smiling face snap of every single human being in the world.” Over at the project’s website, there’s a nifty map which shows all the places around the world where people are tagging photos from, which you can add to by snapping of a photo of yourself, posting it to Twitter with the hashtag #smilesfilm, and geotagging it. Technology! It’s the way we learn to enjoy ourselves. Below, you can watch a video of Ono walking through the process; there are only 3,712 photos uploaded to date but I imagine the tally will grow, even if she never gets to everyone else in the world.
