Based on These Clips, ‘Smashed’ Is The Probably Feel Bad Movie of the Year

+

Ever year it seems like there’s one extremely sad indie movie about a shaky romance that captures folks’ attention. Last year it was Like Crazy, and the year before that brought us the extremely moving and gloomy Blue Valentine. This October will see the release of Smashed, which won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and stars former BULLETT It Girl Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and former BULLETT tour guide Aaron Paul, as a couple whose drinking has become a very serious problem. There’s no official trailer yet, but there’s three clips from the movie today that make it seem like it is probably not a fun time at all.

The first is a brief conversation between Winstead and Paul’s characters, where Paul wishes that he could’ve met her when the two weren’t alcoholics (people love to cast Aaron Paul in roles where the character has a serious substance use problem, huh?). The second shows Winstead being fired from her job as a teacher by Megan Mullally, and the third shows her first AA meeting. If this is the stuff they’re willing to show us now, imagine how screwed up the rest of the movie must be. The James Ponsoldt-directed Smashed hits theaters Oct. 12, watch the three clips below.
