Feminists in Saudi Arabia are taking huge risks to destroy inequality. In a new video, “Hwages,” by video artist Majed Al-Esa, women in hijabs skateboard, play basketball and bowl, with pins covered by the faces of government officials. For American women, these may seem like mundane activities, but for Saudi women, even tossing a basketball is forbidden, without male supervision. The radical video also shows the women singing in various Saudi dialects, shouting feminist and controversial lyrics as they demand change—”If only God would rid us of men,” they chant.
Al-Esa’s video comes at an important time for Saudi women. Artists and activists are finally using their voices in a culture that violently condemns dissent. Demonstrations like “Hwages” shed light on the dire situation, while also inciting change. The video is not just a protest against male guardianship—it’s a call to arms. Let’s hope more women start joining the fight.
