It is okay to feel a little conflicted by Shia LaBeouf’s success, because I imagine even his mother would have a hard time completely vouching for his method of shout-speak acting that seems to have won over America’s casting directors. Despite having acted in three — three! – Transformers movies, LaBeouf is getting a clean slate this year as he heads toward headier, maturer material in movies like Lawless and the upcoming Nymphomaniac. And how did he score a role in the latter film, you might ask? By sending a sex tape of himself and his girlfriend to director Lars von Trier.
No, really. He got the part, so we’ve got to imagine that somewhere in von Trier’s basement (because where else would such a tape be?) there’s some rough footage of LaBeouf and his lady getting physical in all sorts of unkind ways, enough to get him cast in a film that could’ve essentially been titled Movie About Fucking. Which is certainly some kind of method acting! And the type that’s unlikely to make your significant other happy in any way, if reports are to believed, though maybe she should put the situation in perspective. I think everyone in New York would kill themselves to sleep with someone who’s been in a Lars von Trier movie.
