Manhattan-based filmmaker Sebastian Sommer takes cues from circa-2007 Britney in his new fashion film She Told Me She Was Dead, an exploration of paparazzi culture’s dark underbelly, starring actress and model Hari Nef. Nef plays Amber Mugabe, a post-internet it girl hounded by a throng of twinky reporters whose fawning questions swiftly become sinister. VFILES cinematographer Jake Moore’s choppy shots eerily mirror the invasive clips that populate gossip sites from Perez Hilton to TMZ. The narrative is satirical, especially the bloodsoaked ending, but scarily true to life.
The film shows off designs by Parsons alum Isabel S-K, including t-shirts from her Lil B-inspired graduate collection and a custom graphic dress with prints of Nef’s face. It also showcases SS14 pieces from Roberto Piqueras, MEAT Clothing, and NYFW darlings Degen.
Inspired by internet age alienation, Sommer has released four previous shorts and is currently writing his first feature film.
