Second Trailer for ‘The Master’ Shows Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Title Character

+

It’s been almost four years since There Will Be Blood and this second clip from The Master (you can watch the first one here) definitely makes it seems like Paul Thomas Anderson is set on teasing us until the release of his follow-up this October. Here, we finally get our first look at Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film’s eponymous role, and Amy Adams who plays his character’s wife. In its 90-second length, you don’t really learn anything about the film that you didn’t know before (Joaquin Phoenix’s character is troubled, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s is charismatic), but the lovely cinematography and Jonny Greenwood’s claustrophobic score seem to telegraph the film’s mood, which is always better than finding out the whole plot of a movie. Luckily, since this is a movie that’s kind of based on Scientology, it’s only a matter of time before these trailers start hitting special effects pay dirt: thetans, crystal palaces on alien shores, lightsabers, pod-racing. All of that stuff’s gonna be in there, right?
