Fashion is great at offending people. From cultural appropriation to plagiarism to exploitation, eating disorders to embezzlement, political messages to animal slaughter and the sheer opulence of it all, fashion is an equal opportunity troll.
It therefore makes perfect sense that the so-called “Super Bowl of Fashion” would boast a theme that could, if handled incorrectly, offend a whole bunch of people. Hell, even if handled correctly this theme would send think pieces sputtering across the Internet. Alright, enough preamble, here we go. According to WWD, the theme of next year’s Met Gala is Fashion and religion.
Delicious, right? Not only would we get to revisit archival Galliano pieces, we’d get to see a whole bunch of people pissed off. I bet Madonna is already planning her outfit.
The Met has yet to comment on these rumors (which WWD seems to be presenting as fact) but we pray to the fashion gods it’s true.
