There have been dozens of advance reviews of The Dark Knight Rises, most of which are overwhelmingly positive. But! As we reported yesterday, one reviewer by the name of Marshall Fine became the first critic to break its perfect streak of positivity with a “rotten” score, inspiring a ton of incendiary invective from the Internet’s less sane denizens, those who apparently think the integrity of a multi-million blockbuster is something to protect. (Sample comments: “yo ahole, didya took some of that aholetic gas from scarecrow?” “I knew there’d be a contrarian troll or hipster somewhere to taint the film’s perfect 100% fresh rating.” Hipsters! Ruining everything.) It got so bad that Rotten Tomatoes editor-in-chief Matt Atchity actually had to close comments on Fine’s review and write a letter explaining things like “opinion” and “balance” to RT’s legions of fanboys. “If I could ask everyone for one thing, it’s this: don’t be a dick,” he writes. “Even if you think someone else is being a dick. Just take a deep breath, step away from the computer, and maybe go for a walk. Have a smoke if you need one. There are plenty of other things to get angry about, like war, famine, poverty and crime. But not movie reviews.” Well said—and there wasn’t even one commenter to call him “gay” in the comments below. The Dark Knight Rises comes out on Thursday, of course. Prep yourself here.
