The angle a lot of people are taking on their coverage of this year’s Cannes Film Festival is the fact that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are going to be anointed by having films in competition at the ultra-prestigious festival at the same time. Cute, right? This first full-length trailer for Pattinson’s film Cosmopolis was cut to make way for the film’s showing at the fest, so it’s not intended for American audiences—think violence and nudity of the hardcore ilk—but it’s a snapshot of the movie all the same. Pattinson plays the slick, morally absent billionaire Eric Packer, as we follow him as he makes his way across Manhattan in an extremely nice limo searching for a haircut. Naturally, hijinks involving giant rats ensue. The tagline at the end of trailer tries to sell Cosmopolis as “the first film about our new millennium,” but we’re pretty sure that dubious honor will always belong to Hackers, so ahead of its time it was.
Pattinson is supported by some other biggish names here; Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton, and Jay Baruchel all show up in various forms of sinisterism. If you take all that, add it to the fact that Cosmopolis is directed by the pretty revered David Cronenberg (in what looks like a return to his phantasmagoric roots), and based on a book by “great living American author” Don DeLilo, then you can surmise that this marks the first truly promising outing in his after-Twilight star career.
