Everyone knew the former Disney stars of Spring Breakers would be pushing their respective envelopes in Harmony Korine’s paean to seasonal debauchery, but the red band trailer shows exactly why Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez won’t ever go back to their kiddie roots. More cursing! Nudity! Gucci Mane! Bong ripping! But not to make it seem like an adventure in baby’s first parental rebuke, because that would be selling the apparent themes of rebellion and female empowerment a little short. This trailer is a bit slicker than the previous trailers we’ve seen, revealing a tighter and more engaging story, which is no doubt due to the lack of censorship—a little bit closer to the movie that will come out in March 22, perfectly timed for the doldrums of film season. Because when all that’s playing is a slab of boilerplate action and rom-com pablum, more than a few casual viewers will probably be enticed to see Selena Gomez’s new movie—only to be surprised with this. It’s going to be so cool.
