(SPOILER WARNING IF FOR SOME REASON YOU HAVEN’T FIGURED OUT THAT YOU SHOULDN’T BE ONLINE, EVER, AFTER A NEW GAME OF THRONES EPISODE IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE MEANS TO IMMEDIATELY WATCH IT) So, how about last night’s Game of Thrones? Everyone who’d already torn through the books knew what was going to happen at the big wedding to seal the Stark and Frey alliance: a massacre organized by Tywin Lannister and Walder Frey after Robb Stark had slighted the latter by breaking an oath to marry one of his daughters. Even with that prior knowledge, the Red Wedding was an astonishingly violent affair—it opened with the repeated stabbing of a pregnant woman’s belly and devolved into an orgy of throat slitting, arrow shooting, and heart stabbing that climaxed with the heartless deaths of Robb and Catelyn Stark, two of the show’s most prominent, and, in the handsome Robb’s case, rebloggable characters.

For those who knew about the twist in advance, there was an element of perversity in wondering how the book-less watchers would react to the bloodbath. Thankfully, a Twitter called @RedWeddingTears has taken to collecting the shocked reactions of those miserable at the exit of their favorite characters, the seemingly encompassing Lannister supremacy, the callousness of HBO in authorizing such a move, the callousness of author George R.R. Martin in penning such a scene, and so forth. Robb and Catelyn are dead, and some more screwed up shit is on its way; duh, because this is Game of Thrones, and no such heroic resolutions are coming just three seasons into an adaptation of a seven book series. But you can scroll through this feed and feel the pain with the rest of the Internet.
