Ralph Lauren promised his guests something special for his Polo show at this year’s New York Fashion Week. It was an extra special occasion, because this marked the debut of Polo for Women, Lauren’s first collection solely for females. The Central Park location was already a dead giveaway that at the very least, the new collection would be shown underneath the moonlight in one of NYC’s most romantic locations. But nobody guessed just how far Lauren and his team of big-thinkers would go. The result of their vision was something Instagram was calling #Polo4D, basically a fashion show presented over water, entirely in hologram. It’s the logical extension of pop culture’s—and yes, fashion is now pop culture—watershed hologram moment: Tupac at Coachella.
The guests, which included famous types like Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, and Kendall Jenner, were taken on golf carts to the Cherry Hill lawn and were treated to champagne and lobster rolls, before projections that were four stories tall of models decked out in Lauren’s SS15 collection galloping across the water. The images were projected on a screen made of misty water, giving the whole thing a dream-like hazy effect. Lauren appeared at the end, in hologram form of course, and saluted the crowd with a weird little dance. The audience, giddy from what they had just seen, returned it with a laugh. RL will be repeating the show tonight at the same location for the general public at 9pm, but if you can’t wait until then, we scoured Instagram to give you a sense of what it was like.
