Quiet Hollers’ Cover of Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ Is Heartbreaking

Considering the type of alt-country and indie-roots style on display on their recent self-titled album, you might not think of Madonna as a logical choice for Quiet Hollers to cover, but that’s what happens when you leave the song selection up to your fans. The Louisville, KY band offered a choice of covers to contributors to their album crowdfunding effort, and “Material Girl” was the outcome. It actually turned out to be a blessing, because the band, whose music is already plenty sad-sounding enough, teased out the melancholy under current in the 80s classic.

“My first reaction was horror, as I instinctively recoil from so-called ‘pop’ music,” vocalist Shadwick Wilde says. “But the lyrics are so fucking sad, and the theme so apropos for an unknown band trying to raise some cash, I had to take an honest crack at it.”
