Queen Bey’s CFDA Speech Celebrates the Power of Black Girl Magic

+

“I encourage you to not forget this power that you have, or take it lightly. We have an opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection.”

Mrs. Knowles-Carter herself took a break from her Formation World Tour to attend last night’s CFDA Awards in NYC. Joined by Jay Z and Blue Ivy, and slaying in a glittering custom Givenchy suit, Beyoncé was presented with the 2016 Fashion Icon award by CFDA president Diane Von Furstenburg. In her speech, Bey paid tribute to Tina Knowles’ effort to dress “four black, country, curvy girls” in an era when most designers dismissed the idea.

“My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and creativity to give her children their dreams. My mother, god bless her soul, designed all of her our first costumes, designed each piece by hand, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail. When I wore these clothes on stage I felt like Khaleesi. It was like an extra suit of armour. It was so much deeper than any brand name.”
