A year ago, underground NYC emcee Quay Dash delivered the incomparable PONYO-produced “Pop Triggaz,” and recently returned with a much more mellow R&B cut, “You Make Me Cray.” The track was birthed in an appropriately chill setting, as Dash casually recorded it alone at a friend’s house, using lyrics from a verse she’d written a while back. It’s this nonchalant approach that makes her music so compelling—she doesn’t seem to try hard and yet the results are always on point. This isn’t carelessness, it’s effortlessness.

Featuring cameos from Cunt Mafia’s Contessa Stuto and nightlife queen Miss Laina Baby, the Serena Jara-directed music video reflects the track’s throwback sonic appeal. “The imagery in the video was all inspired by old rap and R&B music videos Quay showed me, and also the dreamy visuals in her lyrics,” Jara said. “I wanted the video to look lo-fi and sexy like the song, but still hard and feminine.”

The two binge-watched vintage clips like Sabelle’s “Where Did The Love Go (Say What, Say What, Say What?)” from 1994 and Bahamadia’s “3 The Hard Way” from 1996, admiring the low budget quality of this old-school footage. In Jara’s video, we see spliced together clips that echo this aesthetic, featuring the rapper spitting on stage and Laina casually gyrating. “Niggas got dicks, but they can’t even fuck,” Dash raps with conviction, boasting that signature bite that makes ignoring her absolutely impossible.
