Appropriately self-described as Chicago’s “art glam monstrosity,” the Gold Web pairs its psychedelic, dream-pop sound alongside an outlandish on-stage presentation: towering feather crowns with matching wings, kaleidoscope glasses and plenty of shimmering face paint. Armed with the typical camp of an independent cult band, this dynamic assembly brings some much-needed color to the midwestern metropolis.
Lifted off their new five-track FREAKS! EP, “Lightning & the Rain” commands with a thick, big-bodied sound, much like M83 at its darkest, but laced with the bubbling energy of a Glass Candy record. The music video, directed by Nowhere Films director Emily Esperanza, provides a perfect complement, inviting us into a stylized, underground party that’s drenched in neon lights.
