There have been a few changes for New Young Pony Club, who you’ll remember from their inescapable track “Ice Cream” from a few years back. The British group have streamlined their name, now going by NYPC, and have streamlined the band, now a duo of Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence. In their latest video “Sure As the Sun” premiering here today, they’re still as disaffectedly alluring as ever.
The video finds NYPC seemingly rather cynical about love. Set over stock video-like images of happy couples frolicking in the surf, purchasing a home, and lounging in domestic bliss, are unsettling statistics about love and sex. “57% of people admit to cheating on someone”, for example. “More than half of us will have a sexually transmitted disease” reads another. Who’s in the mood for love!?
“Last night we went to a model home. We thought it was love, it was just a mirage,”Bulmer sings.
“‘Sure as the Sun’ embraces all of NYPC’s favorite stylistic trademarks,” Spence told us. “Edgy forward thinking production coupled with unconventional vocal melodies, while the lyrics playfully reminds us that the glut of desire that fuels modern life is as damaging as it is compulsive.”
“We wanted to collide the schmaltz head-on with the brutal reality,” the video’s directors Lucky Generals explained. “Sorry guys, it’s no fairy tale. It was just a mirage.”
NYPC is on tour in the States throughout the rest of the May.
