The best music videos reveal little truths that are bubbling under the surface of a song, but may not have been immediately evident. In Juliette Commagere‘s “Big Star,” it’s the reminder that inside all of us lives a hipster tween ballerina who wants to dance on mountaintops and on the beach at dusk. Metaphorically, sure, but also in the literal sense.
For the video for “Big Star,” from the Los Angeles artists’ Human LP on Aeronaut Records, Commagere says she wanted to let her “control freak flag fly” and direct it herself. “I have so many ideas always swimming around in my head, so I decided to take a risk.” The star of the video, besides the effervescently alluring synth-ballad itself, is her niece, Hana Commagere-Hagen, who she calls her muse. “Her father is former pro surfer Hans Hagen, and as the ocean is always a source of inspiration for me we obviously had to shoot some of it on the beach in Laguna. I made all the costumes, my father shot it, and it was edited by my dear friend Max Goldblatt who added his touch of genius and beauty as well.”
