“At times I wish that I could disappear,” sings My Gold Mask lead singer Gretta Rochelle, her bright vocals adding airy contrast to band member Jack Armondo’s dark, urgent guitar and James Andrew’s industrial drums. Having first formed in 2009, the Chicago-based outfit has worn a number of different “masks,” this noticeable versatility aiding MGM’s longevity.

What they’re delivering now, however, is the band’s best sonic recipe yet—a sophisticated electro-pop foundation, painted with the soaring ingenuity of Shiny Toy Guns’ 2006 debut We Are Pilots and dotted with the nostalgic confidence of 1980’s Pat Benatar.

“‘Connect’ is us exploring the pop side of My Gold Mask and letting a little more light into the darkness,” the band explains. “In a time when so many people seem connected through social media and all that, we’re really pulling away from each other in other ways. This is about feelings that come from meeting someone more like you and finding the courage to reach out no matter what anyone else might think.”
