It feels like a new year for most of us but the fashion calendar knows no start or finish. One season’s sold while another is sewn. In fashion, it’s been 2013 since last fall and now we’re seeing next fall, or next “pre-fall”. What is time anyway? Here are some of our favorites.
Christopher Kane has this magical way with materials wherein the traditional connotations of whatever he employs–here, thick royal velvet, stone jaguar fur, and floral tulle–become subdued and subverted, so we see the things anew, we see them for their texture and color. He did this most miraculously last season with lace and brocade and other frothy things that should have read one way but became something wholly else in his hands. What that magic is I’m not sure but we’ll let it be because Kane is making some of the most enchanting clothes on the market right now.
The New Wave and bloody stylings of David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve in The Hunger turned Preen on to an atypical palette. Red and black are not colors they usually like to pair but the colors made sense in the London punk tartan they mixed into little girl flounce coats, popped collar suiting, and colorless moto jackets.
BCBG Max Azria
BCBG is like a commercial pool where top down trickle downs–like last season Celine’s deep sheer Vs, Balenciaga and Givenchy’s cascading ruffles, and the boxy moto jackets of Proenza Schouler–come together, diluted and more placid, but decidedly more budget-friendly and still fun. This season, the assemblage made for a very pretty, forties-imbued collection of playsuits, midi dresses, and cropped palazzo pant suits.
