Okay everyone, pack it in. Power down your computers and hit the showers or whatever it is people with office jobs do at the end of the shift, because we’ve got all the internet we need for the day covered, with this mashup of “Somebody That I Used to Know” and “Call Me Maybe,” from internetty internet people Pomplamoose.
The twee pop duo, who’ll you’ll remember from their adorable/insufferable covers of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” and others, explain the method behind their ingenious madness thusly, in case it wasn’t obvious, which it is, because you’re a person who has the internet, and presumably understand how music works:
For the chorus, we used the famous chord hits of “Call Me Maybe” but superimposed the melody and lyrics from Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” For the verses, we used Gotye’s chords and “Call Me Maybe”‘s lyrics.
For good measure, they’ve thrown in a riff on the classic Twilight Zone episode “Button, Button,” later remade in the 2009 film The Box starring Cameron Diaz, which you didn’t see.
Here’s an idea for a Twilight Zone episode: The entire world kept playing slightly different versions of the same two songs over and over again and we all stood by and watched it happen as if it were completely normal.
