Though it may not be more exciting than Rick Owens’ penis-baring menswear collection (nothing will ever be as exciting), the gleaming gold leaf makeup he debuted today in Paris was a wonderfully bold gesture. Makeup artist Lucia Pieroni cited Mayan goddesses as the core inspiration behind this look, plastering select models’ faces with yellow, silver and gold foil.
The luxe material is often used only in small doses, adding subtle accents to a model’s face to enhance her beauty. Pieroni, however, rebuked convention (a la Owens) and covered every inch of models’ faces to create a compelling army that looked almost like decaying artifacts uncovered in an ancient Mayan temple. The foil was intentionally applied haphazardly, spilling delicately into the hairline with small pieces breaking off and falling to the concrete catwalk as models paraded in Owens’ draping fashion.
Next fall, expect to see us at Starbucks with a face full of gold leaf and deliberately placed peepholes in our pants—Owens, you’re a true inspiration.
